Flax might be good in humans and dogs, but in our opinion, it is not best for horses.

Rutgers notes that you should not feed flax to horses, but if you are going to feed flax you should soak it for 20 minutes to make it safer and more effective.

Flax contains wrong phosphorous/calcium ratio for horses which can result in Epiphycitis and OCD (see Merck’s Veterinary Manual).

Good horsemen know that Flax is the cheapest way to get a shine, (BUT DOES NOT ENHANCE COLOR), but we’ve never known a good horseman who would feed his horse Flax as so many suspect it might cause obesity, lethargy and maybe even Cushings.  They also know after milled, Flax often becomes rancid in 2 weeks and can cause colic.

But if you have to soak it to eliminate toxins or make it effective, and if you have to process it to make it effective, yet processing or chewing could release toxins, why go there?

Cheval employees keep their horses on large doses of all products all year round – preferring regular formulas as those are the most effective. One week prior to showing, they pull their horses off regular formula and feed the show formula (to maintain build up in the system).
